Soon we will begin our New Year Countdown, as we gather with friends and family tomorrow our family will be taking a look back in 2018. It never ceases to amaze me just how much can happen and change in 12 months! Our family has certainly had some ups and some downs this year, it has been a whirlwind of adventures, renovations, new beginnings and a few losses along the way.
This past spring our basement sprung a leak, at first it was not too bad, a small pooling in the corner of the rec room. With the heavy rains that hit our area, that small pool became a steady stream, wrecking anything in its path. What was to be a small repair job outside of our home became a decent sized dig, with an equally decent sized price tag!
It turns out our sump pump was broken at the pipe just outside of the foundation, along with multiple clogged drains. As I watched them clear the drains I could have sworn they pulled out multiple trees’s! It was no wonder the water had begun to pool around the foundation of our home. It took the crew 2 days to repair the exterior of our home, it took us MUCH longer to repair the interior.
Thankfully we had some great helpers come to our rescue, with me being in school full time, it was up to Kevan and our fathers to tackle the renovation. I am proud to say they did an amazing job! I am in love with how it turned out, and just in time for the Holidays!

We are very pleased with how this room turned out, despite the expenses and the frustration this room came along to become something more than just a space to hang out. During this renovation project, our fathers got to know each other and work alongside each other. It was wonderful for us to watch, we were so happy to see that our fathers got along so well.
Our families have come together on more than one occasion now to share a meal, we have celebrated birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and tomorrow New Year’s Eve dinner together. I think I speak for all of us here at Baby Chickadee when I say we all feel very blessed to have such an amazing family.
We are not very big on resolutions, rather we prefer to set goals and help each other reach those goals. The problem with resolutions is that we often set the bar so high that we don’t take into account that life is full of unexpected surprises, and sometimes unrealistic expectations.
Set forth a goal, and take small steps to make that goal a reality! We have all discussed what our goals will be moving into 2019, we have made plans and decided on new adventures we hope to take. Rather than make resolutions we choose to reflect on the past year and be proud of what goals we have achieved and tweak goals we have not yet reached.
I am currently enrolled in the Digital Photography Program at our local community college. I was pretty close to getting a final semester filled with A’s, I was so very close, I missed it by two! However, they were B’s and that is so much better than F’s!
My goal is to continue doing my best and learning as much as I possibly can about Photography, as well as be a little better at keeping up on the blog. I’ve found my self a little sidetracked, it is my hope to have no less than one new post a week.
Improving my organizational skills is another goal I hope to achieve.
2018 has been one of the best years I have had, trust me when I say I have had some pretty crappy years leading up to this past year. I finished up two years of College in the Massage Therapy Program, I met the love of my life, the kids and I have been blessed with an extended family, and we are seeing our hopes and dreams come true.
Kevan was an all around Rock Star this year!
His many achievements this year included being a one-man show at his place of employment during a transitional time for the company. He put in so many long hours and worked very hard to assist his customers, going above and beyond the call of duty most days. I am very proud of him and was even more proud while at his company holiday party his hard work was acknowledged and appreciated.
When he isn’t working, he has been organizing, repairing and renovating our home.
Kevan stepped up to and into the role of Step Father to our three children, he is a natural, he has more patients as a parent than I can ever hope to have. There is a reason he is the good cop around here!
His Nerf gun collection expanded quite a bit, and trust me no one in our home is upset by this!
MVP of 2018… I think so!
Gavin entered his first year of high school, and despite numerous people telling him he wouldn’t see the success he hoped to at his chosen school, he has proved them all so very wrong!
While faced with new challenges of being in high school for the first time, he has also struggled with anxiety. Rather than running away and hiding from this he spoke up, asked for help and has been seeing a counsellor. This is a huge deal! I am most proud of him for this alone.
This kid has been my sidekick and right-hand man from the moment he was born, every year I have proudly watched him grow into the amazing young man he is today. I have no doubts he will become an amazingly strong young man with good ethics, passion, compassion and a strong will to achieve all the goals he sets in life.
I love you, Gavin, keep up the amazing work and keep on proving the doubters wrong!
Addie has faced some setbacks in her fight against Epilepsy, she began having Tonic-Clonic Seizures again. After almost two years free of this type of seizure she is back to square one. That has certainly not stopped her from reaching her goals and living life the fullest.
I am so very proud of her, she has taken it upon herself, with the help of her best friend to advocate for Epilepsy Warriors. She has spent time educating herself, tracking her seizures and writing a journal to help keep her Dr’s informed when she goes to appointments.
This year is going to be a tough fight with many challenges including new medications, numerous appointments, and specialized tests.
Not once has she crumbled and given up! She is my hero!
Addie has had some amazing adventures this year, including finding her best friend and her places among her peers. She is working very hard at school and her grades are improving.
At Christmas Addie stood up in front of the family and sang a song, she showed extreme courage and pride. This kid is going places!
I love you, Miss A, you constantly have me in awe, your strength and courage inspire me greatly, keep it up! Know that I will always have your back and I will fight the war on Epilepsy with you every single step!
Aurora has grown so much and done amazingly well in school so far.
Aurora is a smart kid and has discussed her dreams of becoming an Engineer ( No Kevan not the train conducting kind)
She attended some camps at the YMCA designed for kids who have an interest in building and engineering, as well as horseback riding.
Recently she has taken up knitting, and I am thrilled! She is doing very well and was quick to learn. I have enjoyed sitting with her many afternoons knitting away and discussing life’s trivial things like ” Why does the dogs farts smell like pepperoni?”
Aurora’s biggest challenge this year was learning how to appropriately express her frustrations, as well as learning the hard way that climbing and swinging off of furniture ends poorly.
This kid cracks me up, during our many Nerf gun wars she took a pillow and decided she would be the target, pretending to be a cow. At one point the cow slipped and fell and took a dart to the head, instead of crying and complaining she simply said ” MOO OWW” She is now known fondly as MooOww when it comes time for Nerf wars.
Aurora continues to be the strong, courageous, outspoken, tough girl I admire and love. She is a supportive little sister in Adelaide’s fight against Epilepsy and has taken up to tagging along during appointments. She has been a valuable asset to team Addie taking note and accurately describing seizure events when necessary.
Aurora never changes who you are, keep that fire burning, never lose your strength, I love you so very much mini-me.
