I have long been fascinated with crystal ball photography for about a year, I came across an add-on FaceBook a year ago and thought it was such a neat tool. I put off ordering one, I figured since I was just beginning the Digital Photography course I would get one for graduation.
Much to my surprise and delight, I was given the MerryNine Crystal Ball as a gift! I could not wait to get out there and try it out, as a matter of fact, I went out first thing Christmas Day and took some photos with it!
What Is Crystal Ball Photography?
Simply put, crystal ball photography is using a crystal ball to capture an image! Yep, it really is just that simple of an explanation, a photographer will find a subject they wish to capture and frame it with the crystal ball. The camera will then be focused on the center of the ball and a photo will be taken.
Technically, crystal ball photography is taking refraction photographs and the crystal ball is known as a lens ball. Images captured are displayed upside down within the ball, which can either be left as such or edited in programs to be rotated or flipped to show the image right side up. It becomes a matter of preference, appeal, and creativity during the editing process.
Crystal Balls add a unique and interesting view of the world around us, and the opportunities to use this tool are endless. Search Pinterest and thousands of ideas and concepts appear!
Who Can Use Crystal Balls For Photography?
Anyone! Do you have a phone with a camera? BAM Crystal Ball Photography!
I have also seen an artist use the ball as a subject for drawing or painting and the results are just as stunning and interesting as a photograph.
They are very simple to use and come in a variety of sizes, choosing the size of Crystal Ball is a personal preference based decision. The larger the ball, the larger the image captured. Keep in mind while choosing a size that even the smallest ball is quite heavy, so if you plan to keep the ball in your photography bag (you totally should!), the weight is going to be a big factor.
I have the medium-sized ball which is 80 mm, sizes range from 60 mm or smaller up to 100mm!
What I love most about the medium size is that it does not take up much space in my camera bag, as well as the fact that it fits nicely in my coat pocket, allowing me to have it on hand without unpacking it for every opportunity I come across. I tend to take nature walks, something lightweight and easy to pull out at a moments notice is ideal for me.
MerryNine Clear Crystal Ball
I love this company, my ball came in a nice sized box with everything I would need to protect it, keep it safe, and even display it!
It is made from the clearest k9 material, it’s a nice smooth clear ball, no bubbles no visible lines or imperfections. The colours produced are amazing, as well as the fact that there is NO distortion!
The ball came with a velvet storage pouch, as well as a professional mirror cleaning cloth, which is super handy if you tend to have sweaty hands while photographing. Guilty!!! I love that I can quickly wipe off the fingerprints, and won’t have any post shoot cleaning to do in Photoshop!
The kit contains a beautiful squared base which allows you to display the beautiful ball, but also aids in propping the ball for certain scenes where you do not have a place to put the ball.
The price of the MerryNine Crystal Ball is amazing, it is affordable for all budgets, affordability is a huge pro when you are just starting out in Photography! At $22.99 Canadian I call that more than fair, especially when you see the images you are able to produce from such a gorgeous and fabulously priced crystal ball. If you plan to have one prop in your toolkit, I highly recommend this one!!!
Not Just A Photography Prop
Crystal Balls, of course, are not simply a photography prop, they have long been used in divination. As a meditation tool, I can tell you that this ball has been a godsend. I prefer to focus on something while I meditate, the ball is so clear, on a moonlit night I love pulling out my MerryNine and sitting amongst the stars and moon glancing into the surface of the ball.
Crystal Balls make beautiful decor pieces, as they cast interesting reflections and are just beautiful to gaze into. With the stand, you’ll be able to display your crystal ball in any place that suits you. They make great conversational pieces, as I have yet to meet anyone who does not stop to view the ball.
Other uses include
I, like many Photographers often hit a creative block, crystal balls can help with this problem by giving you an added view and vantage point in the world around you.
Recently I took my crystal ball to the celebration of lights here in town, I had a lot of fun looking at the lights through the ball. Everything looked so dreamy, I had a great time capturing that with my lens.
I also enjoy watching and seeing what other Photographers come up with when they use a crystal ball, the possibilities are truly endless and the photographs are always stunning! I can not wait to see what other images I am able to capture using this ball. If you are holding back on purchasing a crystal ball, DON’T you are missing out on some great opportunities and some amazing shots that you are sure o be proud of!
